Urinary leaks for the first time

When did you first notice that you were experiencing urinary leaks? Read on to find out what experienced users had to say in our survey.

Note: All data collected from a Unicharm Japan survey conducted between January 22 and February 2, 2015 (1,456 respondents who have experienced urinary leaks)

More than 60% of respondents noticed their first leak during their 30s or 40s!

How old were you when you first noticed a urinary leak?

More than 60% of users had their first leakage experience in their 30s or 40s—13.6% at age 30–34, 18.4% at age 35–39, 18.3% at age 40–44, and 16.1% at age 45–49.

According to a separate study conducted by Unicharm, one in three women in their 40s have experienced urinary leaks.

The point is that urinary leaks are far from uncommon, and can happen to anyone.

62.2% of respondents used a sanitary napkin or pantiliner when they noticed their first leak

What did you do when you noticed your first leak?

The majority of respondents said they used a sanitary napkin or pantiliner when they first noticed urinary leaks. Another 23.3% researched urinary leaks online, while 22.3% used a product designed for urinary incontinence.

Although it’s quite common for people to use a sanitary napkin or pantiliner to deal with leaks at first, they’re typically dissatisfied with the dampness and concerned about absorbency and smell. Those who truly want reliability and confidence switch to products designed for incontinence!

Most respondents noticed their first leak when they couldn’t make it to the toilet in time

When was the first time you noticed a urinary leak?

Respondents most commonly reported noticing leaks when they couldn’t make it to the toilet in time (25.6%), followed by more soiling or more frequent soiling of their underwear.

Other responses included “when I sneezed” or “when I smelled urine”.
